Chapter Ten

AFTER THAT THE MEETING dispersed, everyone looked a little sheepish for giving me such a hard time only for me to totally pass out. It was clear that there was unfinished business in the Order to take care of, but with the flame restored—no thanks to my screw up—and the news broken to everyone, I guess it was time to call it a night.

Marius and I were the last ones out. As we went down the temple steps beneath the archangels, he gestured for me to follow him. “You don’t look good,” he said. “I have something—”

“I’m fine,” I said, but I didn’t feel fine. I felt like I was walking on stilts, and mentally, I was confused and trying to understand what I’d seen and why I’d seen it.

The moon was still bright and painting the blades of grass silver as we crossed campus in the opposite direction from the dorms and Casablanca, and toward the stadium.

“What happened?” I managed to say. “Just now. What happened to me?”

“Not yet,” Marius said from a few paces ahead of me. “We’ll talk once you’ve had a chance to regain your strength.”

Apparently regaining my strength involved something in the locker room for the discus team, because Marius led me off the path to the stadium that was being rebuilt and in the direction of a small fieldhouse with a golden grate locking it up for the night that he opened with a wave of the hand. Great security system.

Inside, it was all polished blue tile and quiet. Around the bend was the locker room, the lockers made of a rich mahogany, polished to a shine, and all the fixtures marble and gold. It was hard to reconcile this with what I thought of as a typical grungy male locker room, but then again, philodiscus wasn’t exactly football.

“Sit,” Marius said, and gestured at the wooden bench that spanned the length of the room. I sat, having no interest in fighting against my own comfort, and watched as Marius approached one of the doors and traced a quick and elaborate symbol on the front of it. The path of his finger flashed gold, then blue, and the door gently swung open. Marius rummaged around a bit and I could see some of his uniforms hanging, more discs, and even a stick of deodorant, which for some reason felt deeply personal for me to see. But I also sort of liked knowing that he was an Old Spice guy. I guess the good ol’ fashion human stuff is still the best for covering up any odors.

He retrieved a small packet of something and a copper drinking cup, which he took around another corner. I heard the whooshing sound of a tap filling the cup with water. He came back around the corner, shaking the contents of the packet into the cup.

“Here,” he said at last. He held out the cup to me.

I took it but didn’t drink. “What is it?” I asked.

“It’s a restorative drink,” Marius said.
